ELBOW/ARM PAIN

INTRODUCTION

Most of the elbow and shoulder pain observed in Emerson Physical Therapy & Rehab Center is caused by injury, poor posture, lack of proper function, and poor stability. Many patients experience elbow and shoulder pain due to sports injuries and excessive use during this type of activity. At Emerson Physical Therapy & Rehab Center, we offer non-surgical options for effective and safe treatment of elbow and shoulder pain. You will receive an individual treatment plan that aims to return you to the level of activity and lifestyle you are used to without having to deal with the pain.

We will show you how to become free from pain, correct the cause, and eliminate symptoms.

Emerson Physical Therapy & Rehab Center provides a very specific, individualized, and comprehensive approach that determines the exact cause of the pain and treats it as such.

SYMPTOMS/CAUSES

Pain in the elbow and arm depends on the area and structures that have been irritated and affect the brain, causing nociception to specific elbow and arm areas. Pain in the elbows and arms can be divided into 5 simple reasons:

  • 1. Trauma
  • 2. Arthritis
  • 3. Instability usually resulting from poor posture development
  • 4. Developmental dysfunctions leading to poor motor control
  • 5. Soft tissue (bursitis, tendonitis)

The pain that prevents movement is a warning sign requiring immediate medical attention.

DIAGNOSIS

At Emerson Physical Therapy & Rehab Center, the doctor will start with a comprehensive study that will deal with the beginning, cause, duration, severity, vectors, establish significant tasks and functional activities that cause elbow and arm pain. The cause of shoulder pain will be determined at this point; however, in severe cases, magnetic resonance imaging is required.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSTICS:

  • Golfers Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
  • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)
  • Ulnar Neuropathy
  • Radial Neuropathy
  • Posterior Interosseous Nerve ImpingementElbow

TREATMENT

At Emerson Physical Therapy & Rehab Center, we have extensive experience in the treatment of elbow and shoulder pain. Based on functional assessment, we create an individual treatment plan. Treatment options may vary depending on the type and stage of elbow and arm pain as well as the structures and muscles and joints. The treatment will restore the alignment, mobility, and improve the stability of the elbow and arm. The pain will be resolved by properly releasing the specific tissue and fascia to increase and improve the movement, which will prolong the muscle-fascial tissue and lengthen the ligaments and muscles to reduce tension. The treatment will be a combination of manual therapy and physical therapy exercises. We use our experience in manual medicine and rehabilitation to retrain the elbow to help restore the understanding of the cortical regular movement pattern. The rehabilitation program will aim to eliminate pain, increase the range of motion, increase stability, and strengthen internal muscles to eliminate the cause of pain.
